“There is something more powerful than any army. Something strong enough to topple kings, and even Darklings. Do you know what that thing is?”
I shook my head, inching away from him.
“Faith,” he breathed, his black eyes wild. “Faith.”
(Leigh Bardugo; Shadow and Bone)
Last year I read the Six of Crows duology and I really adored Leigh’s writing. I wanted to read this trilogy soon after, but somehow I postponed it again and again. I don’t know if I just forgot about it or I just wanted this set of covers, that doesn’t matter. When I started reading and all the Grisha showed up, I felt like coming home. I had no idea what the plot would be, I just knew it was in the same world as Six of Crows and I was hooked from the beginning. The writing flowed in a certain way that I just kept turning the page and read a ton of pages in every go.
The story was written very well, including some really unexpected twists and the characters developed accordingly. I am still marveled by the concept of Grisha, this world and this story. Everything fitted together so seamlessly, like in Harry Potter for example, and while I was reading this book, I couldn’t really comprehend how this was the first book in this world. The book itself is definitely not perfect, hence why I gave it four stars. There were some things I didn’t like and I can’t really explain what those are as they contain spoilers, sadly. I can say they are matters of taste and nothing major for me personally. Overall, a really good book and I would really recommend this book to others, especially if you read and loved Six of Crows or fantasy in general.
I have started the second book in this trilogy yesterday and about 50 pages in and there was another twist. Leigh’s writing keeps surprising me and I think I will be able to read this trilogy back to back. I am already feeling really happy thinking about it and even though I am not even finished yet, I am very excited for the new duology in this universe!
